Staff Sgt. Gilad Nehemiya Nitan

Staff Sergeant Gilad Nehemya Nitzan, 21, from Shilo, was a soldier in the Givati Reconnaissance Unit. He fell in combat in the northern Gaza Strip.

He was eulogized: “Gilan Nitzan, a neighbor and brother, an amazing and smiling child. Before enlisting, he constantly pressured to help him get accepted into Givati. I made a deal with him that if he promised to work really hard, I would make a few calls to friends in the army and ensure he got accepted into the reconnaissance unit. He smiled and said ‘Of course,’ shy but determined. He kept his promise, stood strong until the end! May your memory be a blessing, dear brother.”

  1. . . . they were young,
    Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
    They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
    They fell with their faces to the foe.

    They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
    Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
    At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

    This segment of For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon (1914) is always read at Remembrance Day observance in Canada. We will remember you.
