Ido Harush

“We lived in the same complex, in the military housing in Mitzpe Ramon,” recalls his friend Eli Weiss. “He was the operations officer of Battalion 77, a role that works in pairs. He wasn’t on duty when the rockets and gunfire started in the south. So he did what they do in drills – he went into a protected space and waited for the shooting to end. It started around 6:30, and he even managed to call his mother and tell her everything was fine, not to worry. That he was in a protected space and everything was okay. Then, unexpectedly, an attack on the outpost began. In such a situation, the drill is to reinforce the command post. The one in the command post was the operations non-commissioned officer, and they reinforced the position with three more soldiers from Golani and an armored corps officer. As soon as they heard the shots, Ido and his friend from the operations unit ran together as they were. He ran barefoot with shorts and his weapon in hand. They began to fight the terrorists. He was filmed firing amid the barrage. Ido and his friend managed to eliminate four to five terrorists. He ran forward, as expected of soldiers. He didn’t have to, he could have stayed in the protected space. But the moment he heard that someone in the command post needed help, he ran there. But there were too many. All seven who were there were killed at the entrance to the Zikim outpost.”
