Elachanan Meir Kalmanzon

Captain (res.) Elachanan Meir Kalmanzon, son of Yochi and Rabbi Binyamin Kalmanzon from Otniel. He was an officer in the Judea and Samaria Division and 41 years old when he fell in battle.
His father, Rabbi Binyamin (Benny) Yosef Kalmanzon, is a prominent figure in religious Zionism, president of the Otniel Yeshiva. He founded the Otniel Yeshiva and led it for many years. He eulogized his son: “Elchanan found an armored jeep and abandoned equipment in the chaos of battle. He, his brother, and his nephew rescued more than 100 civilians, with the three family members being called “Team Elchanan.” They repeatedly entered and exited the danger zone for 14 and a half hours. Many citizens were trapped, including elderly people and children. Elchanan kept re-entering the inferno amid ongoing combat. Initially, some of the residents refused to believe they were Jews until they sang Simchat Torah songs, recited the Shema Yisrael prayer, and convincingly identified themselves as religious Jews. In each rescue, they squeezed 10-11 people into a four-seater jeep. At one point, Elchanan was shot. Menachem, who was also injured, rescued him along with Itiel, their nephew. Menachem’s injury was minor, but Elchanan’s was critical. Itiel saw the doctors cover Elchanan with a blanket. The rabbi was informed of the tragedy by his family members who were in the battle. My children heard the news and called me: Dad, Grandpa, Elchanan. What more can be said in such a case?”
